  • Minister of State Dr Jimmy Devins Celebrates the Launch of the Digital Humanities Observatory

    23 October 2008 - Dr Jimmy Devins TD, Minister of State at the Department of Science and Education, officially launched the DHO on 22 October 2008. He was welcomed by RIA President Professor Nicholas Canny, RIA Secretary Professor Jane Conroy, and the Director of the Digital Humanities Observatory, Dr Susan Schreibman. The launch was a tremendous success as over 150 invited guests enjoyed fascinating conversation and were treated to an engaging series of posters presented by researchers from throughout the Island.

  • A Version of Amy Friedlander Talk on Scholarship and Computing Now Available Online

    18 Oct 2008 - A copy of Dr Friedlander's talk, Digits and Dreams: Scholarship and computing in the age of abundance, is now available from the CLIR website. Dr  Friedlander was the inaugural speaker for the 2008 Autumn Speaker Series. Her talk centred on the tenuous balance between the power of computing and the contextualising role of the human in humanities research.

     

  • Digital Humanities Summer School

    7 July 2008 - The Digital Humanities Observatory hosted its inaugural Digital Humanities Summer School from 1-5 July 2008 at Academy House. The Summer School brought together over 40 researchers, programmers, and librarians from across the island for five days of study, discussion, and reflection on digital humanities issues. The week included instruction in project management and intensive workshops on text encoding and digital imaging.

     

  • Appointment of Dot Porter

    The DHO is pleased to announce the appointment of Dot Porter as Metadata Manager.

    Dot joins us from the University of Kentucky, where she currently serves as Program Coordinator for the Collaboratory for Research in Computing for Humanities at the Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments.

  • Appointment of Don Gourley

    Don Gourley The DHO is pleased to announce the appointment of Don Gourley as Information Technology Manager. Don joins the Academy from the Washington Research Library Consortium, a resource-sharing federation of universities in the Washington, D.C. area, where he is the Director of Information Technology. Don has managed a range of technical projects in both the public and private sectors. He has served as the lead architect for a number of Web-based library information systems, such as a personalized portal for library patrons, an intra-consortium borrowing and document delivery service, and a repository for managing and preserving digital collections.
